Best Songs of 2011
69My favorite songs of the year ... so far
Some might say it's premature, but since 2011 is already a third of the way over I thought it might be fun to take stock of the year in music thus far. I'm no music expert -- just a big fan (OK, addict) -- but in my estimation, I think it's been a pretty good year for music so far, with a lot of established artists releasing solid new albums and plenty of new artists hitting the scene as well. I've put together a list of my favorite new songs from the first 4 months of 2011 and I hope it gives you some ideas for your spring/summer playlists. I'll warn you that it's not a list of Top 40 songs... most of the new music I like is from lesser-known or independent artists, particularly in the electronic, indie rock and folk genres. So, if you're looking for some Drake or some Bieber, look elsewhere. :-) You can preview or purchase any of these songs by clicking on the Amazon links below. I chose Amazon over iTunes because Amazon is a waaay better place to purchase music than iTunes, imho. OK, put on your headphones and get listenin'!
Why I chose these songs
- Architecture in Helsinki // Contact High -- I'm not gonna lie; I'm kind of obsessed with this song... the synth, the falsetto, the catchy chorus, everything. Normally I think these Aussies sound more like The New Pornographers but in this song they sound a little more like Cut Copy at their best. Give it a go.
- Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs // Household Goods -- TEED is actually just one guy, I understand. He describes his style as just "dance music" but I think you'll agree that it's deeper than most dance music. Anyway this track rocks and he performed at SXSW 2011 so you'll probably be hearing more from him.
- Datarock // Position of Love -- Wikipedia describes these guys as a "Norwegian Electro Rock Band." I think they sound kinda like Talking Heads meets Chromeo. Whatever they are, I like em! They've been around for a few years and have a lot of good songs. This one is from their "Catcher in the Rye" EP although I like this one more than the title track. Check it!
- Lykke Li // I Follow Rivers -- Everybody knows that that strange little Scandinavian chick Lykke Li is awesome, and I believe her latest album fully lives up to the impressive reputation she's already built during her young career. I like this one a little bit more than the first single from this album ("Get Some") cause the chorus is a little more melodic and substantial. I dunno. Try it on!
- Cut Copy // Need You Now -- Loved many of their previous records like "Hearts on Fire" and "Feel the Love", but I wasn't too crazy about their latest album on first listen. But, like this song, it builds slowly, growing on you, until suddenly, midway through, you're in full-on electropop bliss mode -- kind of hard feeling to explain, which is why you need to listen for yourself! (You can hear the song in its entirety on YouTube).
- Toro y Moi // Still Sound -- Toro y Moi is the definition of CHILL. I'm not even sure what you'd call this genre but I've seen it called "lo-fi" or "chillwave." If you want some really chill music for lounging by the pool with your alcoholic beverage of choice, or recovering poolside from last night's overindulgence, this is it! If you like this track, check out "Talamak" from his last album as well as fellow chillwavers Washed Out and Panda Bear.
- James Blake // Limit to Your Love -- This guy is super talented. All the songs on this album combine beautiful, jazzy vocals with spare electronic arrangements. This song, a Feist cover, is especially haunting. Click "play" and get chills.
- Cold War Kids // Louder Than Ever -- I wasn't a huge fan of the last CWK album but their new album has a really different sound and I especially love this song. Also check out this album's title track, "Mine is Yours."
- Foster the People // Pumped Up Kicks -- This song just has a siiick sound that causes me to crank the volume to ELEVEN every time it comes on. I mean, who doesn't love a song with whistling?! If you listen to the lyrics, though, they're kind of creepy... It seems to be about a troubled kid about to go a shooting rampage. Anyway, these guys are also up-and-coming and they played at Coachella this year. Check out this song and you'll be hooked, I promise.
- Little Hurricane // Haunted Heart -- Little Hurricane is a new group from San Diego (my hometown) and like some other bands that have recently come out of SD like Delta Spirit and The Soft Pack, these guys are really talented. They have kind of a bluesy White Stripes meets Black Keys sound. Love the dark lyrics in this song: "You'll be the beat in my heart when there is none/ And the air in my lungs when my breath is done."
- Foo Fighters // Rope -- Since they're one of the hugest bands in the world, you would think that the Foo Fighters would have started to suck by now... but their latest album, "Wasting Light" is totally rawk-solid, classic FF from start to finish. Other favorite tracks from this one include "Dear Rosemary" and "Arlandria."
- Tapes n Tapes // Freak Out -- Tapes and Tapes have been around for awhile, but sadly, I didn't know of them until I heard a song from their latest record on the radio late one night. "Badaboom" was the song I heard but I think "Freak Out" might be even better. It's also the single. You've got to check out Tapes n Tapes if you haven't heard them and like indie rock.
Electronic
Indie/Alt. Rock
Folky
- The Pains of Being Pure at Heart // Heart in Your Heartbreak -- These guys are kind of "indie pop." Which, loosely translated, means: happy-sounding, guitar-heavy music paired with sad, thoughtful lyrics -- like the ones in this super-catchy, but sad-enough-to-make-you-go-"aww" song: "She was the heart in your heartbreak. She was the 'miss' in your mistake. And no matter what you do, it's never gonna come back. (ooh)" Aww.
- Peter Bjorn and John // Breaker Breaker -- PB&J is one of my all-time favorite bands. Their latest album, "Gimme Some", is not my favorite of theirs, but I still like it and respect that they tried to do something different with this one. Like this song, it's faster than their other stuff and more rock than electronic. Catchy as hell, though.
- Okkervil River // Wake and Be Fine -- Okkervil River is also another one of my favorite bands and if the rest of their new album, "I Am Very Far" sounds anything like this first single off it, I will not be disappointed.
- The Head and the Heart // Lost in My Mind -- A new band crush of mine. Powerfully melodic folksters from Seattle have made an awesome album to drink whiskey and feel sad to. Also check out "Honey Come Home" and "Rivers and Roads" from this self-titled album.
- Fleet Foxes // Lorelai -- Fleet Foxes are always great and their new album, "Helplessness Blues", is no exception. I like this song off the album especially ... it reminds me of both Bob Dylan's "Fourth Time Around" and "Norwegian Wood" by the Beatles. Which makes me realize how strangely similar those two songs actually are! Hmm... Anyway, I also really like "Someone You'd Admire" from this album.
- Brett Dennen // Can't Stop Thinking About You -- This song is actually more white-boy reggae than it is folk. But whatever it is it's both dance-able and legitimately soulful. Listened to some of the other songs on the album and I wasn't exactly blown away but this is such a perfect, summertime jam. Don't miss it!
- Iron and Wine // Walking Far From Home -- Sam Beam, a.k.a. Iron and Wine, is also a fave of mine, and I really, really enjoy this track. I actually wasn't crazy about the whole album ("Kiss Each Other Clean"), though... seemed kind of over-produced to me compared to previous albums. But this song is not to be missed.
- The Decemberists // January Hymn -- This record, "The King is Dead" is a big departure from their previous stuff in that it is a full-on folk-rock record. But whether you like this genre or not, you have to admit after hearing this album that the Decemberists executed it perfectly. It's very reminiscent of R.E.M., and Peter Buck of R.E.M. actually did guitar on a lot of the tracks. Check out my favorite track from the album.
- R.E.M. // Oh My Heart -- After all these years, Michael Stype and the boys still have it. "Collapse Into Now" is very solid and I think this song, which is about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, is especially powerful.
Now I wanna know what you think!

wow, i'm an old guy who generally feels that anything done after 1978 isn't music, but i sampled some of the tunes you've suggested and they're at least interesting and in most cases quite good.
thanks
Wow! Very nice and lovely list Ms. Shannon. These are the types of music I like listening to as well and I will definitely give these artists a nice home inside my music box. Thank you! However, I must say that I'm kind of disappointed that "Friday" by Rebecca Black was not included

I must admit that many of these I am unfamiliar with, but I love all music. So now I have a new library to explore.
